Hungarian Names

My Grandma's family were Hungarians from Romania. Great-Great Grandpa's name was Irme, Great-Grandpa was Lajos, and Great-Uncle Jim was Emery... Then I found where Uncle Jim baptized most of his kids with Hungarian version of their American names. I was fascinated by the names and looked them up.

Irme (Hungarian)- Emeric/ Emery (Angelized)- James (Americanized) - Jim (Nickname)

Lajos (Hungarian) - Louis (Americanized)

Zsuzsanna (Hungarian) - Susanna (Americanized)

Erzebet (Hungarian) - Elizabeth (Americanized) - Betty (Nickname)

Maria (Hungarian) - Mary (Americanized)

Etelka (Hungarian) - Adela? Though I've seen Ethel listed

Andras (Hungarian) - Andrew (Americanized) - Andy (Nickname)

Jolanda (Hungarian) - Yolanda (Americanized)

Sandor (Hungarian) - Alexander (Americanized)

Poor Cousin John, he was the only one I couldn't find a baptism record for or a Hungarian version of his name that was used.

Map Hunt

I recently connected with a Batiz Cousin which sparked me into going thru my Batiz family research. I've been able to piece together quite a lot of info. Which is great considering my Great-Grandparents immigrated from the then Austro-Hungarian Empire in the early 1900's.

I had some help from a message board on Ancestry.com with translating my Great-Grandparents birth Abstracts (a form of a birth certificate like document) Luckily the person was able to tell me the village names that changed over the years. They also told me the modern day name that I could find on the map.

Great- Grandpa Lajos was from Nagy-Paczal, Szilagy County, Romania. Interestingly enough the family was Hungarian and spoke Hungarian but lived in what is now Romania. Nagy-Paczal, later called Erszollos, was in one of the out-lying areas of Transylvania. Erszollos under went another name change when it melded with Kis-Paczal to become Erkiszollos or Patalusu in Romanian. Now a days it's known as Viisoara, Romania.

I'm able to find Viisoara easy enough on the modern day maps but I wondered about the older maps and counties. I started looking around on the internet to see if I could find old maps for that area.

I found a few interesting things. I looked up old maps for Szilagy County. I found an old map that actually had Nagy Paczal listed on it. It was close to the Bihar County line which was kewl since Great-Grandma was born in Bihar County. They were neighbors of sorts.

Nagy-Paczal (in the Pink area) is NorthEast of Margita (listed in Bihar County). Look next to the I in Bihar. The river just above Margita run right into Nagy-Paczal. Kis-Paczal is just below Nagy-Paczal.

Szilagy County became Salaj County. And the county lines changed. Viisoara is not in Salaj County any more. It's in Bihar County.

Also on the baptism records for the Grey Stone Presbyterian Church in Leechburg, Armstrong, Pennsylvania, I found the birth places for the parents listed. No surprise that Great-Uncle Jim was from Erszollos. It was his wife's place of birth that stumped me. It was hard to make out some of the letters... I thought it was Csomakor or Esomakos in the county Szatm. None of that was correct. Just tonight I played with letters that were similar in looks when written in cursive. I came up with Csomakoz, which is also known as Ciumesti in the county of Szatmar. No wonder I couldn't find anything for the longest time. Interestly Szatmar became Satu Mare County. It wasn't too far from Bihar or Szilagy Counties.

The Family Detective

I like to think of myself as a Family Detective besides being a genealogist. In trying to piece together my Family history I've found I wear many hats...  that of Researcher, Detective, Writer, Mathematician, Analyzer and Historian. I've been researching my family since I was about 16 years old. I'm now in my 40's and have sooo much info that I have trouble organizing it.

My goal started out trying to find out about my Grandpa Manire's family. One of the few times my Sister and I got to talk to him without Grandma nearby, he gave us a starting list of names. He couldn't remember much. He remembered his Grandmas name was Florrie Dozier and that she married a Cavitt. He just barely remembered he had a younger sister named Peggy Marie Manire who was born sometime between his sister Mada and youngest brother Hoople. He remembered the family name Hodges who had a farm. He really couldn't go back too far.

I know I looked for Florrie for years. I tried many different versions of her name. I eventually found her. It's no wonder I couldn't find her... her name was actually Mary Florrie Dozier. She married Richard Andrew Cavitt.

It took me many more years to find Peggy Marie Manire. I found her birth and death certificates on familysearch.org. She wasn't indexed correctly. She was born in 1930 but only lived for about 21 days. The hole we normally have in our heart in the womb usually closes when we are born. Sometimes it doesn't close. This is what happened in her case. Also add the Flu to that and you have one very sick baby.

I came across the Hodges family connection through a posting by 'Wrazzy" on an Ancestry.com message board. She had my family line all except for my Grandpa. I wrote to her and helped her add him and my line to her research. She was able to help me with the family of Benjamin Franklin Hodges. He was my Great-Grandpa however many generations back. His daughter Willie Mae Hodges married Arthur Cornelius Manire. Arthur was my Grandpa's grandpa.

My goal has changed a bit now... I want to try to connect all the Manire families. I've done a pretty good job so far. Sadly alot of the people who remember the family history are fading away to age and health. Every year we tend to loose a link to the history. We are left trying to piece together what we can from the documents and pictures that have already been preserved.

I really started getting into the Manire family research when I came across Bill Manire and his wife. He shared his research they had done that went back to the early 1700's in Virginia. I have since then added to it and expanded it a bit. He mainly only had his direct line. His family descended from the brother to my ancestor.

I like puzzles and this family is like a big puzzle. I'm currently working on many different family names ... Manire, Dozier, Cavitt, Hodges, Zickafoose, Boling, Renz, Murchison, Waters, Hildebrand, and Batiz to name a few.
